Spinal Decompression

When you suffer from bulging or herniated discs and don't want to undergo back surgery, spinal decompression is an option to consider. Dr. Daniel Baune of Pedro Chiro and Lomita Chiro in San Pedro, CA and Lomita, CA is accepting new patients. With more than 30 years of experience, our focus is on getting our patients pain relief and helping them to stay pain-free.

Most adult humans have 24 vertebrae in their spine. These are the bones that support the body and the head. It also connects the other parts of the body together. Ligaments and the discs allow the spine to be flexible and, if you think about it, your body has a great deal of flexibility. The spine has 23 discs that are the shock absorbers so that the bones don't rub together.

Disc issues

All the activities that are a part of daily life put strain on the back and the discs are often the part that takes the biggest impact. Having injured discs is not unusual, and as you age, it becomes very common. Discs can bulge out of their normal space, or they can herniate. When this happens, they press on the nerves that run along the spine. This causes pain that may not be limited to the back. The pain can end up following the sciatic nerve down the legs.

Spinal decompression

This is a process that has allowed the treatment of herniated and bulging discs without having to resort to surgery. It uses a very precise computer program and a decompression machine to pull the vertebrae apart so that, after a while, the vertebrae will separate enough to create a space for the disc to get back where it belongs. Once the disc moves back into its original place, the pain dissipates. Each treatment lasts about 20 minutes and how many you will need depends on your back and how receptive it is to the treatment. The majority of patients complete their treatment within 8 weeks.
